Born in Tehran in 1954, Professor Mandegar completed his primary and secondary education there. He began medical studies at the University of Tehran in 1972, completed surgical specialty training between 1979 and 1984, and finished cardiovascular surgery subspecialty training at the same university in 1987.
He returned to Iran in early 1991 and established the cardiac surgery department at Dr Shariati Hospital in Tehran, serving as its head from the outset. The department developed into a prominent centre for specialist education and research. Teaching medical students and cardiac surgery fellows at the University of Tehran has been a central part of his work, including training more than 35 cardiac surgeons and treating many patients with complex conditions.
His biography records advisory roles with the Iranian Academy of Medical Sciences from 2000 and with the Legal Medicine Organization and Medical Council of Iran from 1990. It also records membership in the American Society of Thoracic Surgeons from 2002, the European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery from 2001, and the Mediterranean association of cardiac and thoracic surgeons from 2000. He is a founding and board member of the Iranian Society of Cardiac Surgeons and a member of Iran’s surgical and atherosclerosis societies.
He has written, translated or compiled more than eight specialist and general-interest books; some have been reprinted more than six times. His publications place particular emphasis on prevention. His cardiac surgery papers have been presented at Iranian and international congresses and published in medical journals, including The Annals of Thoracic Surgery and Echocardiography. He has supervised more than 45 theses in general medicine and cardiovascular surgery.
